Settled status and exempt from immigration control

People with the right of abode, including British citizens, have settled status in the UK. They will usually have a British citizen passport or a certificate of entitlement to the right of abode in their current passport.

People with indefinite leave to enter or remain also have settled status.

Anyone with settled status can study and work in the UK without restriction.

People who are exempt from immigration control do not need immigration permission to enter (or remain in) the UK, but they do not have the right of abode:

  • Serving armed forces
  • Diplomats
  • Heads of state

A person who is exempt from immigration control can study any course with any education provider. Evidence is usually a sticker in the person's passport that states that he or she is exempt from immigration control. It may also be in the form of a biometric residence permit (BRP).
