Tier 4 students

There are two groups of Tier 4 students:

  • Tier 4 (General) students aged 16 or older
  • Tier 4 (Child) students aged 4 - 17

Tier 4 students are subject to restrictions about what and where they can study:

  • Their course must lead to an approved qualification, often at a minimum level set by the Home Office
  • They must study at the institution that issued them with the confirmation of acceptance of studies (CAS) they used in their immigration application.

Since 11 January 2018, students can use Tier 4 to study part-time courses but only where the course leads to a postgraduate qualification (courses leading to a qualification at RQF level 7 or SCQF level 11 and above).

The Tier 4 sticker in the student's passport or the student's biometric residence permit should contain the institution's Tier 4 Sponsor Licence Number, showing that the student is allowed to study at that institution.

A Sponsor Licence Number (SLN) is a selection of numbers and letters (normally nine digits long) issued to an institution by the Home Office when a Tier 4 licence to sponsor international students is granted. Do you know what your institution's Sponsor Licence Number is?
